Case Study: Delivering Mental Health and Wellbeing Support in a High-Risk Operational Environment

The Challenge

A major project-based organisation operating in a geographically isolated, high-risk environment required a wellbeing partner capable of supporting a large and dispersed workforce. The majority of employees worked on a fly-in fly-out (FIFO) basis, often on extended rosters and under demanding operational conditions.

The remote nature of the workplace presented unique challenges, including limited access to traditional support services, workforce transience, and increased exposure to workplace pressures. The organisation sought a proactive approach to workforce wellbeing that could provide immediate clinical support, encourage early intervention, and foster a culture where help-seeking behaviours were normalised.A major project-based organisation operating in a remote, high-risk environment required a wellbeing partner capable of supporting a large and geographically dispersed workforce. Employees worked extended rosters under demanding operational conditions, with limited access to traditional support services and increased exposure to workplace pressures.

The Solution

Acacia delivered a comprehensive workplace wellbeing program designed specifically for a geographically isolated FIFO workforce.

At the centre of the program was Acacia's embedded EAP@Work model, which provided employees with direct access to a clinician onsite for set days each week. By bringing clinical support directly into the workplace, employees could access assistance in a familiar and convenient environment, reducing barriers to care and increasing engagement with support services.

In addition, a dedicated Workplace Wellbeing Consultant regularly visited the site to support workforce engagement, strengthen stakeholder relationships, and ensure wellbeing initiatives remained aligned to operational needs.

The program included:
• Embedded onsite clinical support through the EAP@Work model
• Psychological wellbeing checks to identify emerging risks and support early intervention
• Critical incident response services, including rapid clinician mobilisation following significant operational events
• Group support sessions and structured follow-up care
• Professional supervision services
• Tailored wellbeing resources and communications designed specifically for a FIFO workforce

Acacia also developed customised wellbeing materials that reflected the realities of remote and FIFO work, using practical language and clear pathways to support.

The Outcome

The embedded wellbeing model achieved utilisation rates significantly above industry benchmarks, demonstrating the effectiveness of visible, accessible support delivered within the workplace.

Preventative wellbeing checks enabled the early identification of fatigue, stress and cumulative exposure, allowing employees to access support before issues escalated. Acacia's critical incident response capability ensured that individuals and teams received immediate assistance following high-pressure events, alongside ongoing care and follow-up support.

By combining preventative wellbeing initiatives with responsive clinical services, Acacia helped strengthen workforce resilience and improve access to support across the organisation.

Key Results

• Delivered embedded onsite wellbeing support within a large-scale operational workforce

Impact

This engagement demonstrates Acacia's ability to effectively support geographically isolated and FIFO workforces through embedded clinical models, preventative wellbeing initiatives, responsive critical incident support, and strong stakeholder engagement. By combining proactive and reactive services, Acacia helped improve workforce wellbeing, resilience and access to care in a complex operational environment.
